Sporditeaduste ja füsioteraapia instituut on ülikooli kõige enam liikumisele ja spordile keskenduv instituut, mis on kujunenud arvestatavaks liikumis- ja sporditeaduste keskuseks nii Eestis kui Euroopas. Sporditeaduste ja füsioteraapia instituudi õppe- ja teadustegevus on väga erisuunaline, ulatudes spordipsühholoogia peensustest lihaskontraktsiooni molekulaarsete mehhanismide käsitlemiseni. Kuuludes Tartu ülikooli meditsiiniteaduste valdkonda, iseloomustab sporditeaduste ja füsioteraapia instituudis õppimist tihe koostöö teiste valdkonna spetsialistide ja üliõpilastega.
